Some Cities in Short Supply of College Grads
Some cities are finding that one of the most critical ingredients for a strong city — college graduates — is in short supply. This list of cities with the most college-educated residents is exactly why Michigan needs stronger cities -- we need a higher percentage of our population to have college degrees.
This related New York times article points out that "in a pattern that is part education, part family background, college graduates tend to have longer life expectancies, higher household incomes, lower divorce rates and fewer single-parent families than those with less education, and cities where they cluster tend to exhibit those patterns more strongly."
The article also states, "Retaining graduates is hard when a city has fewer to begin with, because college graduates, like migratory birds, tend to flock to places with many other college graduates."
