Michigan Transportation Odyssey
Our partners at the Transportation for Michigan (Trans4m) campaign are setting off on a voyage this weekend--and whether it will be fantastic or otherwise remains to be seen. Let's Save Michigan will join them for part of the ride, which will demonstrate the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to using buses and trains to get around our great state.
For instance, guess how long it's going to take the travelers to get from Detroit Metro Airport to Traverse City (a 4-hour car trip)? Two entire days. That's bad for Michigan businesses, bad for Michigan tourism, and bad for Michigan citizens who want to get around without getting behind the wheel of a car. From the Trans4m press release:
“It isn’t that someone can’t use public transportation to get from one end of the state to the other; it’s that it’s extremely difficult. A simple trip of a few hours becomes a two-day odyssey. There are too many unnecessary roadblocks placed in the way of streamlined public transit viability,” said Clark Harder, executive director of the statewide Michigan Public Transit Association, which represents bus, light rail and water ferry operators in Michigan.
The travelers will be using Facebook and Twitter throughout the odyssey to report their experiences. And you are welcome to participate, too. You can follow @T4Michigan on Twitter, search the hashtag #MiOdyssey to participate in the conversation, or join the journey itself! The itinerary is on the Michigan Transportation Odyssey Facebook page.
Travelers will end up in Traverse poised to attend a conference whose goal is to make Michigan "the logistics hub of the Midwest."
