Lansing and East Lansing: A Little Bit of Drive and a Little Bit of Passion Goes a Long Way

New York, N.Y., Austin, Texas, and Chicago, Ill. are not typically cities immediately associated with Lansing, Mich. But the Michigan city does have at least one thing in common with them; it was rated one of the top 10 Great Cities for Young Adults by the financial news organization, Kiplinger. You heard it right, Lansing was chosen out of hundreds of thousands of other cities as a great place for young talent to inhabit.
Touting the city's five medical schools, two law schools and Michigan State University, Kiplinger notes Lansing is ideal for young professionals because of the low rent prices, vibrant bar and club scenes and opportunities to make good money in careers like bio and internet technologies.
East Lansing was listed as one of Entrepreneur magazine’s ‘Top 10 College Towns to Start a Business’ because of the city’s commitment to using its university ties to create and incubate new local businesses.
Some believe moving out of state is the only way to find a great city, but national recognition shows Michigan cities are becoming innovative and attractive.
However, uncovering Michigan’s gem cities and attracting innovative people to fill them doesn’t just happen out of luck. One reason the Lansing area has received this attention is because of grass-roots organizations like Accelerate Lansing. Accelerate Lansing is committed to ‘accelerating civic engagement, urban revitalization, neighborhood empowerment, and cultural enrichment’ in the greater Lansing area. The group aims at attracting young talent and the Kiplinger rating was a sign that with passion and drive, citizens can revitalize their cities and put Michigan back on the map.
Of course, mentions in national magazines and websites do not give Michiganders reason to kick back and relax, there are still many challenges ahead of our state but by working together and bettering our communities, our state will be revitalized.
Accelerate Lansing began as a group of people who wanted to see a change in Michigan. This recognition proves that with drive and passion, you can make a difference in your community.
