Celebrating Michigan: 2010 Michigan Winter Beer Festival

This Saturday nearly 50 craft brewers—including 35 Michigan-owned and operated microbreweries and brewpubs—will gather in Grand Rapids to take part in the fifth-annual Michigan Winter Beer Festival. Beer enthusiast will be able to sample 300-plus beers at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park just north of the city.

The festival is put on by the Michigan Brewers Guild, which actively promotes Michigan brewed beers. Its often overlooked but Michigan actually has the 6th most microbreweries in the nation.

One brewpub that'll be in attendance this weekend is The Livery. This Benton Harbor-based brewery is notable for doing its part to fuel the economic recovery in southwestern Michigan—in addition to brewing great beer.

In 2005, brewmaster Steve Berthel renovated what was once an old and abandoned theater. Berthel could have gutted the building, but instead he preserved the stage and mezzanine, and added a state-of-the-art sound system. As a result, The Livery has the distinction of being the only brewpub in Michigan to host performances by national acts.

Berthel turned an abandoned building into a destination. This is just the type of vision we'll need at to turn this state around.

Unfortunately, tickets appear to be sold out according to what we've read online. However, you can always plan ahead for the Michigan Brewers Guild summer festival in Ypsilanti or the fall festival in Detroit.

At Let's Save Michigan we believe festivals play a key role in providing and celebrating the unique character of Michigan that is essential to creating the desirable cities we want to live, work and play in.
